Hollywood actor Michael Sheen has paid £ 1m debt for £ 900 people affected by the closure of the Port Talbot stove, South Wales, who left 2,800 workers without a job five months ago.
The actor, known for his roles in Amadeus, Twilight and a very royal scandal, has begun, among others, an initiative to gain debt, personally investing £ 100,000 to buy and cancel debts instead of profit from them. “I had no idea how this bizarre system worked, but it seemed as a good thing,” Sheen admitted, stressing that he had no money to “throw around”, but he wanted the effort to be effective.
The idea is rooted after an emotional meeting with a cafe in Port Talbot, who told Shin about steels in tears after losing their jobs. “It really hit home,” he said. “I just thought – all I can do to help.”
Incredibly, Shin does not know the identities of those who have helped them, only their locations and the types of debt they have carried. “I would never know who they are, I still don’t know who they are,” he shared. He added that because of the “stigma” about discussing money, some people may not realize that their debts have been paid and urged them to check their accounts.
His efforts are part of the new Documentary on Channel 4, the secret gift of a million million shin, exposing how financial institutions are profited from vulnerable people. The debt market allows companies to buy unpaid loans at a reduced price, while borrows remain responsible for the entire amount. Sheen used this hole to erase debts than to benefit them.
A longtime social cause representative, Gene, declared himself an actor “Nonprofit” in 2021, dedicating his earnings to significant initiatives. His latest act of generosity strengthens his commitment to helping communities in need.
