“Why bans old cars when the planes fly for 40 years?

Hardly two days after using its strict fuel ban on the end of life, Delhi’s government paused for its temporary driving, worshiping the tide of public rage and sharp criticism from opposition leaders. In such criticism, a former Indian Air Force officer criticized Delhi’s government’s decision to ban the sale of fuel to the end of his life (EOL).

Former Indian Air Force Officer Sanjev Kapur has questioned the selective implementation of policy by targeting personal vehicles. He inquired why working with 40-year-old aircraft and 30-year-old other trading is fine, but 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles are illegal to appear on Delhi’s streets.

In the X (formal Twitter), he wrote: “We still fly aircraft over 40 years old and many of our trains, buses, boats, ferries and commercial aircraft in everyday use are more than three decades.

According to a November 2024 analysis report from the Center for Science and Environment (CSE), cars are the largest source of pollution in Delhi, contributing over 51% of local sources. Despite initiatives such as the CNG program, the gradual phase of older diesel and petrol vehicles and implementation of stricter emission standards, air quality continues to degrade, especially in the winters.

The Delhi government on July 1, bans fuel for the end of life-10 years or older for diesel vehicles and 15 years or older for petrol vehicles-which are deregistered and are not allowed to turn on roads according to court orders. Only seven overuse vehicles were temporarily seized by authorities on the second day.
