Donald Trump has said he will be happy for the United States to become a “extraordinary member” of the Commonwealth if King Charles should have offered the offer.
The US president announced on Friday from the Sun to refer to the alleged “secret offer”, the British monarch should expand during a planned state visit to Trump in the UK. He added: “I love King Charles. It sounds good to me!”
The UK’s government has tried to deploy the royal family as a means of smoothing relations with Trumpwho has long expressed admiration for them.
The United States has never been part of Commonwealthwhich was originally made up of former British colonies and now includes 56 countries as members.
Canada, which Trump said would like to annex to whose new prime minister, Mark Carney, King Charles met this week, has been a member of Commonwealth since 1931.
The story of the Sun was followed by an article by the Daily Mail, which says the plans are “allegedly in the works to make the United States the next” accompanying member “of the Commonwealth”, adding that the idea was discussed “the highest level”.
The article adds that the US involvement in the Commonwealth “can reduce the current conflict” with Canada.
The White House has not yet said when the president will visit the UK.
