What happens when capitalism expires in lack? This is the question of what Nikil interest has posed to Bill Gates on his latest podcast episode, where Zeroda’s co-founder asked him: “In the world of tomorrow, 10 years from now, many capitalist lenses-is a huge population of boon or Bane?”
Gates, although not giving a to-or-no answer, offered a convincing vision of the future redefined by artificial intelligence-the one where traditional capitalist frameworks may not apply.
“Let’s say 20 years now, AI will change enough things that … This pure capitalist framework will probably not explain much,” Gates said. As AI progresses in the domains of white collars and blue strong office work to factory floors, and even a hotel household-he believes that the historical lack of labor will dissolve.
“We have always had a shortage – details, teachers, people to work in factories … Those disadvantages will not exist,” Gates explained. “It’s a pretty deep change that will free up a lot of time. You can retire early. You can work shorter working weeks.”
This change, Gates argues, will force a “philosophical review” on how we appreciate and waste time, especially when the basic production – food, goods, health care – no longer requires the same human contribution. “Welle have created free intelligence,” he said, adding that even the cognitive value of the doctor could soon match or exceed with machinery.

He used health care as the main example: “India has more doctors than Africa, but still not as much as it should be. AI will enter and provide medical intelligence, and there will be no drawback.”
Thinking about his own upbringing in a world of constant shortage, Gates acknowledged that this abundant AI -led is still difficult to fully understand. “Markets are for scarce resources … I feel like I try to understand that future world.”
Whether this transformation comes in 20 or 30, Gates said, not far. “My children – and of course my grandchildren – many of their lives will be in that very changed world.”
