Chinese AI models cause US dominance because the technological gap is narrowing

The United States is a global leader in Artificial intelligenceBut the new report shows that China is rapidly expanding its development.

“China is moving incredibly fast and can be absolutely leveled if the United States falls from its game,” said Gregory Allen, an older adviser at the Wadhwani AI Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

According to a report by Stanford’s AI Index, the United States had 40 significant AI models in 2024, China had 15, and Europe had 3.

Opinion: America must win the race for you – and prepare for the worst

“I think winning the AI race means that the United States will continue to be dominant power in the world in the 21st century,” said the White House and Crypto King David Sachs. “It is true that since the launch of DeepSeek, I think we are just three to six months before China in the Ai model layer.”

Sachs says the layer of the AI is only the surface of a larger chimney of competition, but China shows the greatest improvement in that layer. Models are often estimated at various tests, including languages, mathematical problems, general reasoning and coding. All platforms have improved in recent years, with jumps of 18.8% in general reasoning (MMU) and 48.9% in Doctor level science (GPQA). Coding accuracy (Swe-Bench) jumped from 4.4% in 2023 to 71.7% in 2024.

“Ai is very, very good at learning how to be good at every given test,” Allen said. “The same challenge you have on college receptions – do you measure how capable the student is in their full intellectual potential? Do you measure how good they are to study for standardized testing? There is a similar version of that phenomenon when it comes to AI.”

Experts have expressed concern about how quickly Chinese models have improved in recent years. At the end of 2023, American models performed better 17.5% of the time in language understanding tests (MMLU). Chinese systems reduced that gap to 0.3% in 2024. General testing of reasoning (MMU), the US advantage of 13.5% of the United States fell to 8.1% in the same period. In a more advanced language test (MMLU-Pro), the Chinese Deepsekek-R1 platform has released a higher result than any model made by America.

“When it comes to where the United States is dropped in global competition, I think the far more relevant figure is in the global adoption of technology,” Allen said.

According to Backlinko search engine optimization firm, DeepSeek is estimated to have more than 20 million daily users. ChatGPT has six times more day users like DeepSeek, but the Chinese model has still turned their heads after climbing to the top of the App Store in January.

Some states have banned DeepSeek on government devices. It comes to concern about how China used AI for surveillance and censorship. However, some experts argue that the centralized government in Beijing and fewer restrictions on data privacy have given developers there an advantage.

“We could fight with excessive regulation. We want the regulation to be cautious and responsible. We want to make sure we provide innovation,” Sachs said. “China is a serious competitor, something like half of the world’s AI researchers in China.”

In June Fox news surveyMost registered voters said they had little confidence in the government’s ability to properly regulate AI only 38% had great or certain confidence in government regulation.

In 2019, the United States began regulating who has access to high-tech semiconductors, another layer in the tech chimney.

“Our leading company is Nvidia, and the Chinese national champion is Huawei. And Nvidia is about two years before Huawei, so it’s very good news,” Sachs said. “If for five years, the American technology warehouse has been adopted, say, 80% of the world, it means we have won the AI race. But if in five years, you watch around the world and Huawei has an 80% market share, it means we lost.”

Export controls have limited Chinese firms such as Huawei from access to NVIDIA high-tech chips, which were used to develop AI tools.

“In the absence of this export control policy, which Trump’s administration has doubled and strengthened in important ways, it is likely that the biggest supercomputers for AI will already be in China, powered by US technology,” Allen said.

Some experts claim that these restrictions have made China more appropriate because they have used US technology. In an obvious response to that success, the Trump administration decided to allow Nvidia Chips enter the Chinese market once again and compete against semiconductors who quickly love them in Beijing.

“We have to control the standard. And the way the standards control is to make sure that every company. Each AI developer, every country around the world, is built on the American technology warehouse,” said Nvidia’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang.

In the last layer of the technology warehouse, the semiconductor production company in Taiwan is leading the ground.

“It’s a Taiwanese non-US company, but it’s on the west side of the main book. And it’s a few years before the Chinese equivalent, which is a company called Smick. So, as you go deeper into the chimney, our leadership tends to grow,” Sach said.

By near Taiwan with China, there are fears that Beijing could set its deck technology against Washington.

“I remember that a Taiwanese production capacity had to make big changes in its construction because the train that was almost a mile remote, the train vibrations disrupted this incredibly sensitive equipment,” Allen said. “So if the bombs are doing down Taiwan In the middle of a military attack, these machines will be more than de-calibrated, they will be destroyed, destroyed. And that’s the price of Taiwan’s invasion. “
