Donald Trump said he was “not looking” at the tariffs to enable trade negotiations and that “many countries” had tried to negotiate with US officials.
Earlier on Monday, National Economic Council director Kevin Hasset told Fox News that the White House was in contact with 50 countries seeking trade deals.
“We get fair deals and good deals with every country, and if not, we will have nothing to do with them, they will not be allowed to participate in the United States,” Trump said.
Trump’s comments came hours after he threatened with an additional 50 % tariffs for China if Beijing fails to withdraw its retaliatory taxes to Washington by Tuesday.
“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase over their long -term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the United States will impose additional tariffs on China by 50%, in force on April 9th,” Trump wrote on the Social Truth on Monday.
Trump’s threat to sharply boosting duties to China, the world’s largest exporter, came on the day of acute instability in US markets.
The S&P 500 sharing index with blue chips was moving in a wide range, but closed only 0.2 %. Apple, which is strongly exposed to China through its supply chains, fell by 3.7 %. The technological composite Nasdaq finished the day by 0.1 %.
Markets of goods were also under pressure, with Brent Sawrova, the international marker and the middle of the western Texas benchmark, the benchmark of the United States, each settled about 2.1 percent lower. Copper, widely used industrial metal, which is considered as an advocate of the sentiment of the global economy, fell by 2.3 %.
