The Supreme Court’s justice Sonja Sotomayor told students at Ordorjtown University that judges should be “fiercely independent” to respond to the growing challenges of the rule of law.
Speaking at the forum on Friday, Sotomayor said the judges should “ensure that the state is respected” both in judicial independence and the rights protected by the constitution.
Sotomayor has not mentioned President Donald Trump or his criticism of judges who have ruled against him in some of the more than 175 lawsuits that contest his executive orders. But liberal justice has acknowledged concerns that the country is declining “the usual norms”, which she said were crucial to the functioning justice system.
“After losing our usual norms, we have completely lost the rule of law,” Sotomayor, 70, said during an hour -long conversation with Orori’s Dean of the Law School, William Trearor.
Earlier the same day, Trump asked the Supreme Court to allow his administration to continue deporting alleged members of the Venezuelan gang without hearing.
The presidentargueIt has authorization under the 1798 law previously used only in times of war. Deportations have been on hold since March 15, when the administration sent two migrants to El Salvador in prison despite the referee’s verbal order for the aircraft to turn.
Trump and his assistants have repeatedly blown the judges to halt parts of his far -reaching agenda. Earlier this month, the president of social networks announced that the lawyer in the deportation case was “a radical left lunatic of the judge, the problem and the agitator” and should be recalled.
After Trump made these remarks, Chief Judge Johnon Roberts issued an unusual statement, saying that the impeachment of federal judges was not an “appropriate response” to disagreement with their judgments.
