Athletic Initially it was announced that the contract “would require regulatory approval, which can take nine months to one year”.
Andre P. Barlow, a partner in Doyle, Barlow and Mazard, said the transaction “certainly raises concern for competition, as it can potentially give Disney more control over television sports and reduce competition.
“The deal can potentially result in higher consumer costs, as Disney’s dominance in sports media can limit options and raise streaming or play access prices,” Barlow said.

NHL and ESPN spokesmen did not respond immediately to commentary requests.
The expected review comes after the Ministry of Justice’s antitrust division examines a special agreement Disney reached earlier this year to acquire Control share in the Sports Streaming Fubo TV service. The division demanded additional information from companies in March to investigate whether the agreement would incorrectly concentrate on the sport streaming market.
The deal says NFL Redzone will be available at the new ESPN director-consuming streaming service, available on August 21.
“By combining these media funds in the NHL with ESPN’s reach and innovation, we are creating a premiere destination for football fans,” ESPN President Jimimi Pyimo said in a statement. “Together, ESPN and NHL redefine how fans are involved with game-at any time, anywhere. This deal helps ESPN’s digital future, setting the base for an even stronger offer as we prepare to start our new director.”
The two sides still have to negotiate a final agreement and obtain approval from NHL owners. The contract is subject to regulatory approval and is not given value.
