US authorities have launched an investigation into Jackack Smith, a former special adviser who has been leading two federal criminal cases against President Donald Trump, US media reported on Saturday.
The Special Adviser’s Office told the Newoufor Times that it is investigating Smith for potential violations of the Open Law, which forbids federal workers from engaging in political activity while at work.
Republican Senator Tom Cotton reportedly asked the agency to investigate whether Smith’s actions were designed to influence the 2024 elections.
The agency, which monitors the behavior of federal employees, immediately did not respond to the AFP commentary request.
Smith was appointed a special adviser in 2022 and accused Trump for plotting to annul the 2020 election results and abuse of classified documents after leaving the White House.
Trump has denied both charges and tried to shape them as politically motivated, accusing the justice ministry of being armed against him.
No case has ever come to court, and the special adviser – in line with the justice ministry’s policy to prosecute a session – missed both after Trump won the November 2024 presidential election.
Smith then resigned before Trump fulfilled his promise of the campaign to release him.
The Special Council office operates separately from the Special Councils for the Ministry of Justice, such as the one headed by Smith.
The prosecution’s decisions made by Smith usually do not fall under its jurisdiction, according to the Times.
It cannot be brought against Smith, but it can make its findings to the Ministry of Justice, which has that power.
The most difficult punishment under the opening law is to suspend employment, which does not apply to Smith as he has already resigned.
From the post in January, Trump took a number of penalties against his perceived enemies.
He seized former officials of their security permits and protective details, aimed at law firms involved in past cases and withdrew federal funding from universities.
Last month, the FBI opened criminal investigations for its former director Jameseims Comey and former CIA chief Johnon Brennan, two prominent Trump critics.
A few days later, Comey’s daughter, Mauren – a federal prosecutor who tackled the case of the infamous sex offender Effe Epstein, who was constantly linked to Trump – was fired.
