Voice of America (VOA) has been plunged into crisis after more than 1,300 employees were on vacation after executive orders from former President Donald Trump. The Directive also led to a termination of funding for US news services broadcasting to authoritarian regimes, crippling the organization’s possibility of working effectively in almost 50 languages.
On March 15, President Trump signed an executive order to authorize significant reductions to US -funded media organizations, including VOA. This action has led to the immediate setting of more than 1,300 employees in a paid administrative vacation.
VOA director Michael Abramovitz expressed deep concern, saying that the absence of almost all staff endangers the broadcaster’s mission to deliver confidential news to his global audience.
The executive order also resulted in the severance of contracts with major news agencies, such as the Associated Press, Reuters and the France-Press Agency. Curry Lake, criticizing the US Global Media Agency (USAGM) as “giant rot and burden on the US taxpayer”, promised to reduce its size legally. The lake’s actions met with the opposition, with the former Grant of FF Turner defending the agency’s new headquarters as a measure to save costs.
